Well with the season only 2 weeks away, I will start the thread for field notes across WI.
Last years journal was awesome with a lot of entries from across the state! We had 11,381 hits on it and 505 entries into the journal. It is a great tool to compare what is going on across the state and what the local deer are doing in your area. I hope to get some more hunters to put their entries in and I hope the great posters we had last year will continue to add to the journal this year.
Whether you see no deer or a ton of deer, your entries will help with the big picture. After a couple of years we will be able to see patterns for pre-rut, the rut itself, and post-rut behavior for our state and locales.

When your hunt ends with a kill, please post a picture with your animal. It does not matter if it is a doe, nubby, or buck because each one is a trophy to that individual!

I personally wish every one of you the best of luck this year, and I hope you enjoy the hunt and what goes into it as much as the kill!

speaking of the spot light....I went out tonite and actually saw more bucks than I did does and fawns while shinning-none of the bucks were more 2.5 yrs old, but still more bucks than does tonite.

Did a bit of scouting too today.  I didnt notice much for acorns dropping on our property in Marquette County.  However, yesteday while walking with my son, a couple big old oaks in the city of Oshkosh were "raining" acorns on us.

Good luck you guys and girls.  Lets make this thread twice as good as the one last year.

I was glad you started it Goose, well BWB and I did some quick scouting in an area where we found the first rubs last year and we found 7 fresh rubs!  We were both suprised to find that many so we put one of our cuddeback's up in the spot.  Also seen a mature buck out of velvet too.

Goose- I have not went out shining lately. Gunther and I did go out a while back and saw a few does, but no bucks. Right now it's difficult to see many deer around here because there are so many corn fields. However, once the season starts I'm sure we will be out in full force shining.

I must say finding those first rubs of the year really got my blood pumping!

Well, I just finished reading the thread from last year. Seemed like there was never an intense rut last year for anyone really. I was'nt on here last year during the season but had some good encounters I could have shared. I hope everyone sees enough deer to keep you happy. Good luck to all!

I walked both of our properties today, and have been noticing fresh scrapes along the field edges.  Lots of trails going into and out of the oats/beans/and corn.  We're not too far away...

Well I've been out knocking on doors to try to find a good place to hunt since last Jan. and I thought I had found a great place. A friend is renting a house and the land lord agreed to let us hunt if we put up stands he could also use and plant a few small food plots.

I talked with the owner extensively, asked all the questions, drew up a plan, scouted, planted, trimmed lanes, even put in a few watering holes, put up a few new stands, fixed a few old stands, the place is prime and ready. Went up last weekend only to find a big FOR SALE sign. I called my friend who called the owner, he says forget the For sale sign, it's sold, "you've got 2 weeks to get your stands out." Then he offers me $100 if I just leave my stands there!  At this point, I was seeing red and hung up. I wandered around a little to gather myself then called him back. Asked if the buyer would let me hunt if I leave all my stands up. He said he'd ask and explain to the buyer my situation and get back to me. I got the call this morning, I've got 48 hours to get my stands off the property. he's going to meet me there later today to give me a hand and my friend has to be out of the house Oct 1st. Funny how the stands have to be out by the start of bow season, but the house doesn't need to be empty till Oct. 1st. You can bet I'll be finding out if we can at least hunt til Oct 1st or even just opening weekend. At least then I'd get a little return on MY investment. This wasn't the way I wanted my '09 hunting Journal to begin....

I am so pumped for bow season to open. I live for this time of year. I'm actually having a hard time sleeping at night because all I think about while laying in bed, is sitting in my stand. I have been out shooting quite a bit over the last month or so. My bow and I are READY!!! I have placed my stand in a new location on my property that has very little hunting pressure because it's pretty hard to access, but I will be there. Hope everyone has a great and safe hunt this season.

Wack, sorry to hear that.  Tough break!  Everything happens for a reason though, right?! Gotta believe...

DoeEyed, you are correct in your observation. The rut never really exploded......it was more like a slow trickle with some action here and there. I am hoping that this year will be more intense and noticeable.
I would say that the best week by us was the first week in November.

Yup, definately didn't see hardly any rut activity last year compared to previous years.  Hoping this year is different!

I am also hoping this year is much different. On a better note, my grandpa saw 2 nice 8 pointers out of velvet last night. They weren't on our land, but it's awesome to know that they are shedding.

Wack, forgive me, but you seem to have some of the worst luck of anyone I know. Things will look up. Just keep knocking on those doors! Maybe the new owner will change his/her mind if you talk to them directly.? Good luck!

Goose, any guess after the fact, as to why it was that way? Was it the weather? Lack of mature bucks? Still too many does that the bucks did'nt need to travel far? I've never paid much attention to be honest. Just starting to get interested in some of the finer aspects of hunting. I believe you keep a hunting journal? Have you done any comparisons to previous years?

Live and learn and yes I do believe everything happens for a reason. Not sure what the reasons are right now, but looking forward to finding out. When served lemons, make lemon aid (& vadka). My stands are down, and I'm looking for the brite side. It really doesn't matter where I hunt or how many tags I fill or even about how many deer I'll see, it's about getting out and enjoying the little things. For example, yesterday while taking my stands down I found a walking stick and scared the heck out of my new friend, the land owner/seller with a bright yellow spider. My goal this year is to hunt as many different places as I can, and with as many different hunters as I can. All is not lost, let the season and the challenges it brings begin!

As far as last season goes, I think it was a combination of things that may have messed up the rut as we know it. 1) Lower deer numbers and EAB aimed at lowering the doe count 2) early gun hunting pressure generally makes deer go more nocturnal sooner 3)more bears coyote and wolves in WI than in previous 200 years, the deer herd is trying to adapt to the added predation, human and natural, the deer that can breed without being seen or killed will make the deer herd smarter and harder to hunt and pass the best defensive genes on to the next generation. Without predators deer were only hunted in season, predators hunt year around.
It's been interesting over the years to watch the deer change. I hunted in southern WI during a time when coyotes went from 0 to a lot. My first deer hunting was up in Black River falls before wolves or bears returned and have watched the deer adapt to what's up there today. Today a north woods buck is a different animal to hunt than say a South eastern WI buck or even a Buffalo county buck. Same goes for turkey's too. As predators return to the food chain, everything else has to adapt. We are in a unique period in time to witness these changes. As stewards of the land, it's our job as hunters to balance the food chain properly to insure the future of all species for years to come. Through these Journals we can see who's running into what, where and get a big picture as to the why's. Good luck everyone!

My honest opinion on it is that the Oct. TZone hunt has a major impact on the rut.
The does get all this pressure right before the rut and lead a more nocturnal life. The bucks that are after the does then are doing the same thing.
All that pressure right before the rut is not a good thing IMO.
Yes I keep journals and last year was one of the most unnoticed ruts in my journals.
