Has anyone ever heard of using Vanilla Extract, or any other Natural smells to attract deer??? We hunted a piece of property one time when I was about 15 in San Antonio, TX, and I remember my dad putting vanilla extract in a bottle and opening it when we got in the stand. The smell filled the air pretty quick and I laughed and mocked him about it. Then I was put in my place shortly after. The deer came in licking their chops. I didn't undersatnd it at all. They were literally licking the taste out of the air. I've hesitated putting this on here in fear of being laughed off the forum but it's the honest to Gods truth. I asked my dad what made him even think to do that? His response: "Vanilla came from nature and it has a natural smell. I noticed that I always eat vanilla wafers in the stand and it's never seemed to bother the deer. So I thought I'd try vanilla extract to see how they'd react." Okay guys,,, let me have it.............

I dont use a lot of liquid scents anymore but vanilla is one that I do. It's no sure shot thing, just like everything else in deer hunting, but I can say that I have never had a deer go on alert after smelling it. I have seen deer smell it and then ignore it, had does and fawns push each other out of the way to eat leaves I have dipped in vanilla and have had bucks rub on the stuff. I have also seen deer appear to calm down after smelling the stuff. Deer are curious and vanilla is a very strong but pleasant scent. I read somewhere at one time that vanilla is one of the strongest scents around. It was something like 1 part of vanilla to 1 million parts water and a human nose could still detect at least a faint smell of vanilla.

The STILL #1 P&Y typical whitetail, was killed in 1965 near Peoria, Illinois by Mel Johnson. It scored 204 5/8. I read in an interview with Johnson that he used and always believed in vanilla extract as an attractant, and he was using it when he shot this buck.

RNC: What brought you to use vanilla? This is really intriguing to me. I'd love to find where this came about...

Another guy from our old archery club started using it. He would put it a small spray bottle then cut it with a little water so the sprayer wouldnt clog. Of course he took a fair share of ribbing for trying such a stunt. When he kept getting new pictures of deer from his stand (pictures he took, scouting camreas were not around then) or filling is tag while hunting over the stuff my dad and I looked into it. I tried it and took a 6 pt buck while he was rubbing his forehead on a bush I had put vanilla on. Thats got to be close to 18 years ago. I dont use it every time out but I still use it on a regular basis. Not sure where the guy from the club got the idea to use vanilla though.

I have a feeling deer connect the vanille smell with sugar. Any opinions?

Back when I first started bow hunting(years ago) the first commercial cover scent I used had a vanilla scent to it.I've used it as a deer stop scent but I never thought of it as an attractant, guess old dogs can learn a new trick.

A guy that lives by my Mom and Dad owns Doc's deer scents, he has an attractant that is called sweet demise and I believe it vanilla based. I've heard it's not to bad. Like said earlier if nothing else make would be a good stopping scent.

My wife was at a wild game dinner and Brent Henderson said he has had some success with a small dab on the bottoms of his boots. Shortly after posting that on another thread WW posted the same thing about Mel Johnson, so Ive been trying it. Instead of using it as an attractor, I Pour some into my hand and then wipe the bottoms of my boots. I wear rubber boots so Im not sure how much extra scent might be with the vanilla but I havnt seen any adverse deer reaction. Ill use it before doe pee.

Last year I purchase "Hot Buck" scent and I thought is smelled too sweet. So after reading the vanilla extract thread I went to the cupboard and opened the pure vanilla extract bottle and I swear it smells the same as the so called lure. I am wondering, did I get "snake oiled" last year???

I wonder (I think so though) if it should be 100% PURE vanilla extract instead of synthetic. What about pure peppermint oil? Anise?

Sailfish I have found that the 100% pure vanilla is much more effective. In the winter if anyone I know is heading to Mexico on vacation I ask them to pick a bottle or two up for me. You can get a liter bottle for about $5.00.

Yes I have...A buddy of mine has been using vanilla scented attractant for many years, and seems to have success every year. Has he shot a state record deer yet? No, but he's seen quite a few very nice 3.5 + yo deer that seem to not be deterred by it, and actually are curious with the scent. I personally have never used it.

I have been bowhunting in Wisconsin since 1982. Early on, I used a commercial cover scent called Cover-UP. It was a green, viscous liquid that had a distinct vanilla scent. I believe that the company that produced it was based in Kansas, and if I remember correctly, the owner's name was Russell Hull. I don't know what else was in it but vanilla was definitely a component. It was quite expensive as compared to either pure vanilla extraxt or imitation vanilla. I eventually figured out that I could go to the supermarket and get off the shelf vanilla, achieve the same results, and save some money to boot. I have been using either pure vanilla or imitation vanilla since the early 90s and have had great success with both. It seems to work as an attractant, as I regularly have deer of all age classes, both buck & doe, follow my scent trails all the way to my shooting zones. Once in my shooting zones, the vanilla seems to keep the deer's attention so that I can get away with some movement without alarming the deer. This is important to me since I shoot a Black Widow recurve, and cannot draw ahead of time and just wait for a shot opportunity. I have never, not even once, seen a deer that was obviously alarmed by the scent. There have been times when they have ignored it (the same goes for rut scent) , but most of the time it has kept them in the desired place, and has distracted them long enough for me to get a shot. Just this morning, I saw 13 deer, 6 bucks and 7 antlerless. All but 2 of the bucks were in my shooting zone for almost 25 minutes, right where the vanilla scent trail was. Unfortunately, none of the bucks were big enough to spend a buck tag on. The point is, vanilla can bring them in, keep them there for awhile, and distract them enough so that I can get a good shot off. I'm a believer.

I read this post Saturday afternoon after I got back from a morning hunt where I did not see a single deer. Considering that morning, I figured that I would try this in the evening. To say the least, I'm sold! I think it works as a cover scent as well as attractant. My scent control is basic, soap, laundry detergent and spray, I don't have the scent lock clothing or anything like that I just have to really watch the wind. We had a 5 - 10mph wind yesterday that was perfect for the stand I was in last night so I went for it. I put vanilla on the soles of my boots and a couple drops on a branch next to my stand. I didn't see a deer most of the night ( probably due to the temps being 15 degrees above normal around here) until about sunset. The three does came in from as down wind as it gets and hung out there for 5 mins or better before they ventured up to my stand where one of the does started licking the lower steps on my tree, all three deer were around my stand until well after dark. Too bad I don't have a doe tag for that county. I think that I am gooing to permanantly add the vanilla scent to my arsenal.
