We're just entering the Chase Phase. I saw a buck Sunday morning that was still out seeking and had not hooked up with anything.  Yesterday I saw a mature 10 pointer seriously molesting a herd of doe. The changes come quickly  too.  I can see a huge difference from one day to the next.

There is also a lot of variability among individuals in a herd, just like there is with humans.  Some of the biggest oldest deer hardly get worked up over the rut-- that's probably how they survive that long.  Other deer  go over the top and get themselves wounded or worn out.  Some are fighters, some are lovers, there is as much difference in individuals as there is with humans on this subject.

I have been feeding the deer at my house for 15 years and can even feed a few by hand, so I get to see & study them and their movements daily.  Yesterday, the regular gang of does & fawns came in, but they were acting nervous.  I heard a buck grunt about 50 yards away in the tall weeds.  Sure enough, he came out and looked puzzled at me standing there and the rest of the deer (13 individuals) were calmly milling around near me.  He was a 2 & 1/2 year old 3x4 with a swollen neck.  He chased the does around a little, but they were not willing to hold still for him.  Part of that might reaction have been to his age or lack of dominance, but no does were holding their tails up.  After I had left for work yesterday, my wife saw a wide 4x4 cruise through looking for does.  I doubt the rut is in full swing yet (here in N.C. at least), though it is getting close.

I also saw three bucks Sunday night on my way home from up in Virginia.  One was a little 18 month old, another was a 3x4 2.5 year old, and I saw a 5x4 for the longest time & watched him jump a fence.  He was a 3 & 1/2 year old at least.  All the bucks had big necks and were no doubt cruising for does.

Jim

Depends on where you are in the country.  I have seen rubs and scrapes only. No chasing, No swollen necks.  I am on the east side of WI.  My uncle saw what he called a "big ole buck" with a doe in the middle of parking lot of a home supply store on sunday the 1st of Nov.  He is a non hunter so I am assuming it was chasing.   He is in central WI.

Where I hunt in south Texas the ranch owner says the rut gets going end of Nov begining of Dec.

I was out yesterday afternoon, a small 4 pt came out about 150yds from me, eventually wandered to me then straight away, he stops looking at the other side of the field, I see a rack come up over the beans. Nice 6 walks out and lets the fork know who is bigger, it was short, the fork backs off but comes back and looks like either rubbing the 6 nose or licking him, I am sure a sign of submission but I have never heard of this.  Then a spike comes out about the spot the fork came out. the spike walks right down the field edge to me and the 6 runs over to him, I had them both right in front of me at 20 yds. I already shot a small buck this year so holding off for a nice buck, I have never taken one.  right about dark a doe comes out across the field, only doe I saw all day, she wasn't in the field long when a 4th buck comes out and chases her off, just for fun I called him to me, he only had one spike. None of these bucks were what you would call trophies, but I personally have never seen this much action. Great day.

I think Shaman's post says it all...definitely seeing some chasing and i think by the end of this week and beginning of next we will be full on into the seeking and prime of the rut...at least hear in Jersey and based on what I'm seeing.  you've got to look at the whole and overall trend...like all other species your mileage may vary but on the whole the signs and activity are there.  Now and next week are the time to be in the woods, do whatever you can to be out as much and as long as possible and you'll probably be rewarded for your efforts.  Good luck!

I hear ya brother....its the eternal conflict, to hunt or not to hunt!  What has worked for me is to take a break mid-rut and use that day off to watch the kids while she has a day to herself...and then take her out to dinner or cook dinner for her.  Today was that day for me.  I also let her know that I will scale down my hunting post rut..keep it to maybe once  a week and during the work week instead of the weekends.  The truth is win, lose , or draw, buck, doe or not it gets a lot tougher in post season to harvest a deer..at least in my area, especially after firearms season...so I'll pick and chose my battles ;)

I could try that, but after all my fishing promises I doubt she is going for it.

I am lucky enough to work for a rural water district and get to travel the country side all day at work. I can say that in the last week I have only seen one buck that was trailing a doe across a corn field and he didn't seem very worked up just kinda interested in her following her at some distance. I have been very surprised by this since a cover 150 miles a day or more and see a lot of good deer ground. I also know that so far this year has been a lot slower start than last year. Which is alright by me since I took next week off to hunt. Lol

I hunt in Trempealeau county WI and I believe that I saw what was the first part of the lock down period. I was up there the last week of OCT and there was bucks chasing and sniffing all over the doe. This first week of NOV all I seen was yearling doe and very, very few young bucks. I did not see any 1.5 year old doe. They were all this years young. I did see a button buck mount one of them
