November 3 is the Feast Day of Saint Hubert The following history is taken from the St. Hubert High School web site: Hubert was born about year 656 in what is today called France. As a youth, Hubert was handsome and strong. Since battles were fought with bow and arrow, he soon learned the archer's art. Riding and hunting, especially stag and deer, occupied most of his time. Because of his charming manner, Hubert held a prominent postion among the nobles and seemed to have given himself up entirely to the pomp and vanities of the world. His mother, a devout woman, prayed for him constantly. At the age 26, Hubert married Floribonne, the daughter of Count of Louvain. She made Hubert conscious of his duties to the Church and by her example, he began to change, losing many of his worldly habits. After a little more than a year of marriage and the birth of a son, his wife became ill and soon died. Hubert was filled with grief and soon forgot his promise to be faithful to the Church. On Good Friday, Hubert rode out of the castle alone with bow and arrow to try to lose his sorrow in hunting. At that very hour the faithful were gathering for the Way of the Cross, but Hubert still wanted to go hunting. After more than an hour, a stately stag with high antlers came toward him. Hubert prepared to kill and as he looked again at the the fearless animal he saw a radiant crucifix between his antlers. As Hubert stared in amazement, a voice broke through in solemn silence, "Hubert, unless you turn to the Lord and lead a holy life, you shall quickly go down to hell!" Hubert dismounted, knelt on the ground, and asked the Lord what he should do. Having received a command he followed it joyfully. He gave guardianship of his son to his brother. Hubert became a priest and eventually was consecrated bishop. He prayed, fasted, preached, and converted thousands to the faith, often attracting them by his expertise with the bow and arrow. One day in the year 726, while at prayer, Hubert was given a vision of his death and his place in heaven. Happily he waited and after a few days he became ill and died, with the words of the "Our Father" on his lips. St. Hubert was honored during the Middle Ages as the Patron Saint of Hunters and is still known today as the "archer saint". Note: I fully understand that Sainthood is a stumbling block for many non-Catholics (and Catholics for that matter). Please permit me a brief explanation. First of all, Catholics do not worship Saints! We believe that they are people, who through lives of heroic virtue, have obtained the promises of Christ and the Church proclaims this publicly. This does not deny the fact that many, many others have also obtained those promises. Canonized Saints are just raised up as an example for all. Because we know they are united with God in Heaven, we ask them to join us in our prayers, just as you might ask a friend with a strong and inspiring faith to pray for you here on Earth. So happy St. Hubert's day!

Over on 24hourcampfire.com we all got together back in 2005 and decide that Christmas on Dec 25 was just not cutting it for us hunters and that we'd all move our serious gift giving to The Feast of Saint Hubert on 11/3. It really bites if you're getting a rifle or a shotgun and you have to wait almost a whole year to use it. Moving the gift giving to November 3 cleans that all up nicely. I just got back from the pagent. KYHillChick, Angus, and I just finished parading up and down the driveway. I was in my lederhosen, 'HillChick was in her peasant dress, and Lil Angus played the Duddlesack (German bagpipe). I had my boar spear decorated with a garland of flowers. All the other hunters and I are now going to swill beer until we can't stand, and then go out to have a traditional Black Forest Schutzenfest-- on second thought. . . Since I'm out of work, we kept the gift giving to a minimum this year. I loaded twenty rounds of 30-06 for all the people on my list. KYHillChick gave me a fresh pile of hunting socks all washed and ready for hunting. KYHillChick says she'll buy me a new deer rifle if I land a job that pays more than the last one. Happy Saint Hubert's Day Y'all.

JPH: Great post!!! Not that you asked, but here are some side notes concering our Patron Saint of Hunting that you might not know.... I was born in raised in Hubertus,Wisconsin, a town that was named after Saint Hubert after Catholic priests carried a statue of the Blessed Mary to what became St. Hubert's Catholic Church I believe in the 1840s. My brothers, sisters and I attended first through eighth grade at St. Hubert's Elementary School ... the very same school where in April 1981, I wrote a theme paper for my English class. The assignment was to write a few paragraphs on "what we wanted to be when we grew up." In my paper, I wrote how I wanted to become the editor of Deer & Deer Hunting Magazine. It took me many years of high school, college, 3 years of working for weekly newspapers, working construction with my dad in the summers and much more, but St. Hubert must have been watching over me. Best,

Dan, I did not know any of that. Thank you so much for sharing it with us! There is no doubt in my mind that St. Hubert has interceded on your behalf. It is also my sincere belief that God places us where we can do His will. Dan, you do a fantastic job of editing a publication that promotes the spirit of deer hunting as well as the science and tactical side of it. Things happen for a reason!

As a practicing Catholic, graduate of a Catholic School education, and life long hunter...I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I had never heard of St Hubert! Looks like I'll be marking the calendar from now on. Thanks Joe. on a side note, the label for Jagermeister shows the St Hubert stag. Jagermeister means master hunter as far as I know. http://www.thecross-photo.com/Hubert-Patron_Saint_of_Hunters-Written_by_Mitch_Ballard.htm

Dan-- I remember some of what you said from what was probably your first editorial as editor of D&DH -- especially the part about writing the essay on becoming the editor. Great story, and I'm glad you're in that seat! Steve

This is great stuff everyone! I also rather sheepishly have to admit that despite 16 years of Catholic school and being a bowhunter I didn't know about him either! He is officially the Patron saint of hunters. I looked up some images of him and found the attached. Enjoy! PS - Dan, great work on the magazine. Don't know what I'd do without it!
