Hey everyone!

I was just wondering when the best time of the rut is to break out the rattling horns. I have been using doe bleats and my grunt tube.
So when should I start slammin' the horns together?

Mike

Anytime!
Remember, deer are curious animals, and both bucks and does will come to the horns. Bucks are looking for does these days, and if a buck hears two other bucks fighting, he knows they are probably fighting for breeding rights. Another buck can slip in and breed the doe while the other two are fighting. Although horn rattling may work better earlier in the rut, they will still work to some extent during any phase.

Try and find out ur buck to doe ratio before u start rattling. In places where there are alot of does males do very little rattling (southern ny is like that the ratio is like 20 or 30 to 1 does to bucks). Heavy rattling might scare away more bucks in a place like that than attract them. You said ur using ur grunt tube and a can right? if they are responing well to those rattling will probably help if theyve been ignoring ur calls i would go real light with the rattling or not do it. Theres enough does where i live that most of the bucks will just go somewhere else if they think theres too many males around already. Young deer may be curious but most mature bucks are as wary as they are smart and if theres not alot of rattling going on where u live its prolly not gonna attrac them.

Deer are still curious enough to respond though, if you insist on rattling. Just some light sparring is really all you should need to do if there aren't a lot of mature bucks around, or much competition for breeding rights.

I tend to be cautious when it comes to rattling until I know that the chasing phase has begun and in an area of heavy cover. Most of the time you will find a buck respionds in one of three ways
  • A larger animal will come out to see what the raucous is
  • A smaller buck will show his self to find out who the dominant animals
  • The buck will leave the area, it may sound weird but on a couple of occasions I have seen very nice bucks in these cases after waiting a while. They obviously have established their dominance in the area in the past

No matter what the response it is a skill that is fun and can greatly enhance the hunting experience when a buck responds. If you do it long enough in the right conditions it will eventually work
